In the early 1960s, long before sitcom stardom, with his mild manners and tortoise pacing, Bob Newhart became one of the most unlikely comedy superstars. BEHIND THE BUTTON-DOWN MIND OF BOB NEWHART (1963) showcases the stand-up's unique style, in which he plays a sort of one-man Bob & Ray. In his trademark nervous twitter, he flits between casual observations of foibles and sudden veers into wonderfully obtuse tweakings of the politics of the day.
