Movie Description When ladies' man Robin meets the beautiful Jamika, he falls head over heels. On their first date, though, she greets him with four small surprises: her son and her girlfriend Bebe's three trouble-seeking kids. Robin's dream date turns into a nightmare as the group heads off to the amusement park. Also includes the short "Itsy Bitsy Spider." Animated.
Synopsis Cynical but warm-hearted Robin Harris has his date with a sexy lady friend, Jamika, interrupted by a group of insolent, trouble-making kids from the inner city. Three of the rebellious tykes supposedly belong to Jamika's absent friend Bebe, and the little terrors proceed to torment Harris and the white security guards at a local amusement park where most of the action takes place.
Film Notes Color by DeLuxe.
Based on a comedy routine by the late comedian Robin Harris. The film was initially to be a live-action picture produced and directed by the Hudlin brothers, but Harris' sudden death in 1990 changed the nature of the project.
The designs of the characters and the background artwork were reportedly influenced by Kenyan art and the paintings of the Harlem Renaissance artists.
The video release in the United States also includes the animated short "Itsy Bitsy Spider" (Matthew O'Callaghan, USA, 1992).
Industry Reviews "...An imaginative delight....It's funny, bouncy, keyed to a zesty, driving score....Smith has given the film a terrific, clean look. Its images are spare and economical..." Los Angeles Times - Kevin Thomas (08/01/1992)
"...BEBE'S KIDS becomes a sassy and funny romp that still conveys some serious commentary on racial prejudice in America..." Chicago Sun-Times - Ernest Tucker (08/04/1992)
