BB QUEEN is Bahamadia's long-awaited follow-up to 1996's KOLLAGE. During her time off, the Philly MC kept very busy: she hosted a radio show "Bahamadia's B-Sides," whose title is a perfect metaphor for the MC's flip-side flavor, and she worked with everyone from the Roots to Roni Size.
On this outing, the influence of working with Roni Size on his breakthrough classic NEW FORMS is evident: the closing track, "Pep Talk," finds Bahamadia toasting a jazzy drum'n'bass track with her signature purred delivery. Other tracks don't quite measure up, although the single "Special Forces" will get lots of street cred due to the slew of cameos from underground hip-hop heavyweights (Planet Asia, Rosco, and DJ Revolution). So will "One-4-Teen (Funky For You)," an acid jazz styled cut (chimes, hand claps) featuring Slum Village on the mic.
Bahamadia's personality is as strong as ever. It shines through in her lyrics and in the extremely varied sounds she used to put BB QUEEN together. Although it's only an EP, BB QUEEN is one of the more varied hip-hop releases in recent history.
