Album Notes Personnel includes: George Jones, James Taylor. When BARTENDER'S BLUES was released in 1978, George Jones was in the midst of a long and productive working relationship with producer Billy Sherrill. Sherrill had a successful formula for making Jones records: find a sure-fire single or two, add a couple of tear-jerkers and a few novelty songs, then drag Jones out of the saloon, put him in front of a microphone, and let the star do his thing. As a result, Jones' many records with Sherrill are, except for the recognizable singles, virtually indistinguishable from each other. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing: after all, Sherrill was able to coax surprisingly consistent albums from this notoriously unreliable artist, and in so doing revived the career of country's all-time greatest singer. Under Sherrill's direction, Jones' singing is particularly free and supple, full of delightful surprises and gut-wrenching emotion. The material is solid even if it can't measure up to Jones' early classics like "She Thinks I Still Care" and "The Race is On" (although the James Taylor-penned title track on this record comes close). Curiosity seekers should check out the disco-influenced "I Ain't Got No Business Doing Business Today."
