Industry Reviews Gr 3-6 This brief survey introduces organisms commonly found in tide pools. One or two animals are featured per page; seaweeds and algae are the only plants mentioned. Short blocks of text highlight major characteristics, but the main emphasis is on diet and feeding habits. Most of the animals discussed are invertebrates, e.g., the clam, snail, limpet, sea anemone, sea cucumber, and octopus. Vertebrates include the prickleback fish and sea gull. Unfortunately, the full-color photographs are problematic. In several shots, the creature under discussion is indistinguishable from a mass of other animals or clumps of vegetation. Also, most photos fail to depict the physical characteristics described. While the text is clearly written, some information is omitted. Some scientific terms (gills, mucous, mantle, etc.) that appear in the text are not defined either in context or in the glossary. Several of the same creatures are described in more detail in Elaine Landau's Interesting Invertebrates (1991). Lionel Bender's Invertebrates (1988; o.p., both Watts) also provides more information and includes numerous anatomical diagrams as well. Although some of the facts about various invertebrates' feeding habits are intriguing, Shahan's title's limited scope and poor illustrations will disappoint browsers and students alike.
