Synopsis Beginning and ending with the haunting, mournful songs of chain-gangs, BALLAD OF THE SAD CAFE tells the story of Miss Amelia Evans, owner of the village store, who has crossed eyes and a mannish demeanor. She marries Marvin Macy, who is stricken with love for her. But when he tries to get her in bed, she throws him out of her house; it becomes evident that she wanted him to help with the work, and didn't anticipate any other aspect of their relationship. Marvin turns criminal and is imprisoned. Miss Amelia's cousin Lyman, a dwarf, comes to town. Because Lyman likes company, Miss Amelia turns her store into a cafe and becomes more feminine. Marvin Macy returns from prison, meets Cousin Lyman, and is fascinated by him.
