Album Notes
Also available on Edsel on one CD with FEAST OF HEARTS.
Personnel includes: Chuck Prophet (vocals, guitar); Stephanie Finch (vocals).
For the first half of the '90s, Northern California singer/songwriter Chuck Prophet's solo career not only paralleled that of Neil Young, his obvious idol, but also the early career of Rod Stewart. Prophet spent half his time with partner Dan Stuart in the loose, rangy, sometimes sloppy Green on Red, and also made solo records that were altogether more delicate affairs. 1993's BALINESE DANCER is a fuller-sounding, more cohesive affair than Prophet's solo debut, 1990's spare BROTHER ALDO.
Prophet explores the bluesier side of his musical personality here, with none of the hard-rocking quality of Green on Red's later records. He's joined by longtime foil Stephanie Finch, whose accordion and mournful vocals color all of the songs with a melancholy tone. Maybe it's because of Al Kooper's organ playing, but much of this album sounds like the carnival-esque BLONDE ON BLONDE joined with the dark introspection of Nick Drake's PINK MOON.
