Album Notes
2 LPs on 1 CD.
Personnel includes: Chuck Prophet (vocals, guitar); Stephanie Finch (vocals).
This CD combining Chuck Prophet's 1993 and 1995 albums is a welcome reissue of two unjustly overlooked albums. But it's also rather odd, as these are Prophet's most dissimilar releases. BALINESE DANCER finds Prophet exploring the bluesier side of his musical personality. Al Kooper's carnival-esque organ playing on such scenic tunes as "Baton Rogue" and "Savannah" rests somewhat uneasily against the dark introspection of "Who Am I Foolin'" and the dryly witty "Star-crossed Misbegotten Love."
In comparison, FEAST OF HEARTS is downright bouncy. Produced by Los Lobos' Steve Berlin and featuring songwriting assistance from the always-welcome Jules Shear, the album verges on slick. Accordionist Stephanie Finch's stellar harmony vocals are placed front and center in the crisp, well-played arrangements. Where BALINESE DANCER at times approaches Gram Parsons territory, FEAST OF HEARTS would appeal to fans of Cracker-or even Sheryl Crow.
