Album Notes Personnel: Greg Dulli, Dave Pirner (vocals); Don Fleming (guitar, vocals); Thurston Moore (guitar); Mike Mills (bass, vocals); Dave Grohl (drums). Recorded at Ocean Way, Hollywood, California and Record One, Los Angeles California. BACKBEAT is a film based on the life of Stu Sutcliffe, The Beatles' original bassist. The songs on the soundtrack--12 early-rock favorites the Beatles regularly featured during their Hamburg period--are performed by an alternative rock super-group: drummer Dave Grohl of Nirvana, bassist Mike Mills of R.E.M., guitarists Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and Don Fleming of Gumball, as well as vocalists Greg Dulli of Afghan Whigs and Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum.
Industry Reviews ...this album doesn't maintain the sound of the Beatles as much as it does their spirit... Audio Magazine (07/01/1994)
...one of the great garage albums, as close to a 1963 Beatles bootleg in stereo as humanly possible. Special kudos to Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, who plausibly reinvents George Harrison as a proto-noise rocker.... Stereo Review (03/01/1994)
...how to imbue these musty standards with enough edge to rouse '90s audiences? Solution: Enlist the best from the postpunk music world...[an] inspired experiment... Entertainment Weekly (04/01/1994)
...a group of contemporary musicians has been brought in for a supercharged re-creation. The lineup is stellar...I love the fact that it's Americans claiming this music back... Spin (04/01/1994)
