Album Notes Personnel: Mary Black (vocals); Declan Sinnott (guitar, dobro, mandolin, background vocals), Maire Bhreatnach (fiddle, synthesizer); Pat Crowley (accordion, piano, background vocals); Carl Geraghty (saxophone); Garvan Gallagher (bass); Noel Bridgeman (percussion). Recorded at Ringsend Road Studios, Dublin, Ireland from March to June, 1991. Mary Black, along with Maire Brennan and a few other female singers, popularized Irish folk music on a global level. Her 1991 release BABES IN THE WOOD went straight to Number One on the Irish charts and led to two sell-out shows at London's Royal Albert Hall. As usual, her earthy and ethereal brand of folk pulls from Irish traditions as well as from the influences of Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, and sometime musical companions Emmylou Harris and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Her stunningly beautiful voice is supported on this release by long time musical colleague Declan Sinnot who plays guitars, dobro, and mandolin, and adds lush backing vocals throughout, as well as producing. Highlights include the serene "Prayer For Love" and the album's closer, Joni Mitchell's classic "The Urge For Going." In a sorrowful tune about the end of a love affair, Black's voice brims with passion and empathy for the characters in Mitchell's story.
