Synopsis Trollope's 40th novel, written in 1881, tells the story of a young woman, Ayala (named after a popular champagne that was Trollope's personal favorite), and her sister Lucy. Daughters of a penniless artist, they are forced to live with relatives when he dies, and know they must marry sooner rather than later. Ayala has three suitors and, after much soul-searching, marries not the perfect angel she always dreamed of, but sensible Jonathan Stubbs. Lucy marries a sculptor, despite her family's aversion to artists.
