Album Notes Mouse On Mars includes: Jan St. Werner, Andi Toma. Mouse on Mars' music does not fit into any of the countless electronic music subgenres that have arisen in the late '90s. Mouse on Mars is a subgenre unto itself. Dusseldorf resident Jan St. Werner, who dabbles in other "fracturing electronica" experiments as a member of Microstoria, and Cologne resident Andi Toma manipulate found sounds into loungey electro nuggets resembling some great heretofore-unseen, futuristic pop. AUTODITACKER, their third full length, exhibits a dozen such digital sketches, that are, in the great tradition of Teutonic electronic pop, both booty-shaking and head-nodding. On AUTODITACKER, Mouse On Mars refines its formula: sunset melancholy progressions are the melodic content (this is not a dark, jarring experience), bebop tunes and early reggae dubs serve as compositional blueprints (themes bookend "solos" and other sonic breakdowns), and funky grooves are emphasized over raging beats. The results are organic, high-tech pieces equal parts mystery and science, clarity and hypnosis. Its the kind of instrumental music kids weaned on Eno should always make.
Industry Reviews 3 Stars (out of 5) - ...the Teutonic duo's third album of instrumental electronica is a marvel of impeccably manicured synthetic timbres....when familiar organic sounds come in...it's like hearing them anew... Rolling Stone (01/22/1998)
8 (out of 10) - ...AUTODITACKER...finds the duo...at their silly and creative best. Staging the kind of coup made possible only by good taste and clear vision, Mouse On Mars construct quietly uncompromising nuggets of multilayered techno-pop....With Mouse On Mars, you get to have your cheese and eat it too. Spin (11/01/1997)
...Mouse On Mars...walk the borders that keep techno penned in....a conundrum of digital knots, firing analogue synths and groovy riffs. Melody Maker (08/16/1997)
...Anyone who likes tunes and songs and all that old-fashioned crap would probably keel over in abject horror upon exposure to Mouse On Mars, but for anyone who fancies having their brain fried and served up on a bed of couscous: your Kraft awaits. NME (08/16/1997)
...a messy mosaic of trills, chirps, and buzzing sounds that slam head-first into dense, abstract, and occasionally danceable grooves. What Aphex Twin might sound like had he apprenticed with Kraftwerk. - Rating: A- Entertainment Weekly (11/28/1997)
