Album Notes
Since the music's earliest days, all of the great reggae producers--Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, Bunny Lee, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Sly and Robbie, even Bob Marley--have created their own stables of talent, often releasing the resulting singles and albums on their own labels. Augustus Pablo (born Horace Swaby) is no different. In the years preceding his 1999 death, the producer/mixer/melodica player released many compilations of tracks by his various proteges.
The fifth volume of this lengthy series, 1989's AUGUSTUS PABLO PRESENTS ROCKERS STORY, breaks with tradition in that three of the album's 13 tracks-"555 Crown Street," "Power of the Trinity," and "Struggle in Soweto"-are instrumentals featuring Pablo himself. His instantly recognizable melodica contours the bass-heavy rhythms. The remaining ten tracks, including such classics as Dillinger's "Take it Easy" alongside less well-known but still impressive cuts like "Zambian Step" by Rockers Allstars, are equally fine.
