Synopsis In his third set of memoirs, award-winning novelist Reynolds Price documents a crucial six-year period of his life which began in 1955 when he left North Carolina to study at Oxford University and culminated when he returned home and began his storied teaching career. Price channels his remarkable memory to describe in detail several significant encounters with writers, including W.H. Auden, Jean-Paul Sartre, Eudora Welty, and J.R.R. Tolkien, who helped inspire him in myriad ways as he tuned up his literary voice.

Industry Reviews "Mr. Price's reluctance to write about gay life makes ARDENT SPIRITS feel like a boisterous coming-out party....[T]he book seems most alive when it details what it was like to be young and gay and on the prowl...in the buttoned-down 1950s." (05/13/2009)
"Price regards the years he describes in ARDENT SPIRITS as among the happiest in his life....[yet his] accounts of his most rapturous experiences carry...an undercurrent of melancholy....[The book] succeeds mostly as a wistful meditation on roads not taken." (05/17/2009)
"[Price] shines most in the second half of the memoir, when he loosens his tie a bit on his trips away from Oxford and writes knowingly, wittily and, yes, movingly of his brushes with the famous of the stage and page." (05/17/2009)
"ARDENT SPIRITS is an innovation in that it seems to be the first time that Reynolds Price has acknowledged his homosexuality in print....It would certainly be crudely reductive to suggest that he could have written better if he'd been more open about his own homosexuality. All one can say is that if he'd been less closeted his fiction might have been as effervescent as his new memoir and perhaps just as insouciant." (07/02/2009)
