Album Notes The Lovin' Spoonful: John Sebastian (vocals, autoharp, guitar); Joe Butler (vocals, drums); Zal Yanovsky (guitar); Steve Boone (bass). The Lovin' Spoonful are a band who've been anthologized and repackaged in more configurations than their original five-album output in the mid-'60s. This is by the far the best of the compilations, containing all of their hits along with well-chosen album tracks. It's well-sequenced and the accompanying booklet has both a brief, but articulate overview of their short history and song-by-song comments by the band's leader and songwriter, John Sebastian. A few other bands at the time were exploring similar strains of folk and jug band music, but none so successfully combined the various strains with a rock beat and created this wealth of timeless songs. If forced to own just one Lovin' Spoonful album, this would be the one.
