"Mr. Wilkes paints a sympathetic portrait of an ordinary rabbi and his congregation, but it is difficult to explain why no one in the book is thinking seriously about what it means to be Jewish and American. Why doesn't anyone refer to the rich heritage of Jewish thought, or to the binding nature of covenant, or to the way American Judaism yokes an ancient set of truths with a New World mentality? The problems of one congregation in Worcester are symptomatic of a malaise that isn't about to disappear soon."
