Synopsis In a novel suffused with references to classical music, particularly the string quartet repertoire, Michael (a violinist) and Julia (a pianist) have a passionate youthful affair that ends badly. They meet again 10 years later--a reunion that is made more poignant because Julia has a physical problem that may affect her playing. She is also married, with a son. Michael's love for Julia is a vital part of this novel, but so are his relationships with the other three vividly described members of the Maggiore Quartet.

Industry Reviews "It is not a happy or a lively story but it is continuously interesting....The dialogue has a nice snap to it." Adams
"[M]uch of the best writing in this frustrating, patchy, but deeply fascinating novel describes interacting tensions, personal and technical, between the four brilliantly observed members of the quartet..." Moore
"Much of the time, AN EQUAL MUSIC has the too sensitive tremulousness of a quality English movie from about 1945. It is 'Brief Encounter' with disabilities and better music...." Foley
"It has structure, suspense, plausibility..., and it could be considered richer in these properties than romances usually are. But is it a romance? In any negative sense, only intermittently." Miller
