Synopsis
In his previous book, A HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN 6 GLASSES, Tom Standage examined various historical eras through the lens of a half-dozen essential beverages. Turning to more substantial fare, Standage illuminates how food has played an integral role in shaping the development of humanity. Standage, an editor for The Economist, again employs a division of six to structure the book, but this time, rather than the specific foods themselves, his chapters focus on the unique, yet interconnected social roles food has played over time. He analyzes how the growth and accumulation of food (most prominently corn, wheat, rice, and potatoes) shaped our earliest societies, led to a separation of classes, guided the growth of population, and helped initiate the Industrial Revolution. But lest we should think food's influence on us has waned, Standage uses his final chapter to show how the need to feed the world's rapidly increasing population will be among the greatest challenges of the coming century.
