Personnel includes: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzerald, Bing Crosby (vocals); Jack Teagarden (trombone); Barney Bigard (clarinet); Earl Hines, Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson (piano); Herb Ellis (guitar); Ray Brown, Arvell Shaw (bass); Louis Bellson, Cozy Cole (drums).
Producers include: Milt Gabler.
Compilation producers: Andy McKaie, George Avakian.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios, No. Hollywood, California).
This is a lovingly-packaged three-CD collection of the recordings Armstrong did for the Decca label, during the years 1946-1968. It captures the icon himself--who, in the '20s and '30s, virtually defined jazz trumpet playing (and influenced, directly or indirectly, every instrumentalist that came after him). You'll hear recordings with '40s/'50s small groups (featuring other jazz legends like Jack Teagarden) and big bands (with arrangements by Gordon Jenkins & Sy Oliver, both of whom would work with Sinatra).
There are also duets with legendary singers Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, jazz standards, pop tunes (from various eras) and Louis' summit sessions with Duke Ellington and Oscar Peterson. This set contains the "pop" hits that casual fans will associate with the maestro, including "Hello Dolly" and "What a Wonderful World." Also included is a booklet with great photos and fond remembrances of Armstrong, highlighting the unique, indispensible part he played in American history.
