Album Notes
Originally released on LP, AMERICAN COMPOSER SERIES VOL. 2: STARS & HANK FOREVER, contained one side of Residents versions of Hank Williams songs and a simulated marching band parade of John Philips Sousa marches on the other.
Digitally remastered by Master & Servant (2000, Hamburg, Germany).
This was the first volume in what the Residents originally announced would be a 10-volume American Composer Series. However, the band only completed two issues, this set and STARS & HANK FOREVER!, which explores the music of John Philip Sousa and Hank Williams. The two composers to which this set is dedicated are George Gershwin and James Brown. The former's "Rhapsody in Blue" is given haunting dimensions that somehow sound like they were always there, waiting to be unlocked. Brown's songs are deconstructivist funk workouts colored by the band's characteristically treated and disembodied voices. Brown's eight selections are drawn from LIVE AT THE APOLLO, complete with the show's opening band intro and live audience sounds. "I'll Go Crazy" is an invigorating romp, leaving one only to wonder what the Godfather of Soul would have thought of this wildly avant-garde, yet deeply reverential project.
