Synopsis In her memoir, AMARCORD, Marcella Hazan, the doyenne of Italian cuisine, comes across as an unlikely candidate for the role. Born in Egypt, she spent her teenage years in war-torn Italy. The man who became her husband, who had fled Europe and settled in the United States, met her on a trip to Italy and inspired her with his interest in food. They married and initially settled in New York, but shuttled back to Italy. She recounts the difficulty of finding ingredients for Italian dishes in postwar America, and how she started her first cooking class in her apartment with classmates from a course she took in Chinese cuisine. And then, over time, her popular cookbooks made her famous.
