Album Notes Personnel: Jules Shear (vocals, guitar); Steuart Smith (guitar, harmonica, keyboards); Stewart Lerman (guitar, bass); Ex Xiques (saxophone); Leif Arntzen (trumpet); Rob Hyman (keyboards); Mark Egan (bass); Sammy Merendino (percussion); Suzzy Roche, Susan Cowsill, Vicki Peterson (background vocals). Recorded at Science Again Studios, New York, New York. Jules Shear, while hitless under his own name, carved a niche in the pop/rock-song canon by composing "If She Knew What She Wants," a hit for the Bangles, and "All Through The Night," covered by Cyndi Lauper. Shear synthesizes the vocal and lyrical influences of Bob Dylan and Jackson Browne, yet avoids sounding like either. His approach is informed with a classic pop sensibility, with undertones of the first British Invasion, '60s and early '70s soul, and power-pop. On ALLOW ME, Shear presents a variety of insidiously catchy tunes and wry but humanistic views on love, heartbreak and regret. "The More That I'm Around You" has a tremendous Hollies-meet-Springsteen chorus, with adorable background vocals from Vicki Peterson and Susan Cowsill. "Love with You" is most unexpected--a B.B. King/Robert Cray-styled slice of strutting R&B that Shear pulls off with wry confidence. The optimistic "The Soul of a Child" has a winsome but lilting Byrds/R.E.M.-style jangle. ALLOW ME is a masterpiece of intelligent, adult pop-songwriting.
