Album Notes CANTIGAS DE SANTA MARIA features a selection of sacred songs commissioned by King Alfonso X, ruler of Spain for most of the 13th century. Written in the medieval Spanish vernacular, they are sacred folk songs with great appeal. Joel Cohen, a widely respected performer and musicologist with a specialty in Medieval and Renaissance music, leads a small ensemble of singers and traditional instruments. The songs are wonderfully melodic and catchy, but they are not as simple as they seem. Vocals lilt and harmonize in ways reminiscent of Gregorian chants, but with less of an otherworldly feel. Cohen and his ensemble do their best to recreate accurately the songs as they might have sounded in King Alfonso's court. Regardless of accuracy, however, it is a thoroughly enjoyable recording, whether standing alone or in its historical context.
