Synopsis A forbidden friendship with a badly disfigured soldier in the aftermath of World War I forces thirteen-year-old Annie to redefine the word "hero" and to question conventional ideas of patriotism., When Annie sees the wounded soldiers getting off the train in her town, she is sickened, but is drawn to the veteran's hospital where her doctor father works. There she meets Andrew, and in helping him adjust to his wounds, the 13-year-old Annie sees how terrible war really is and what a price people must pay. Her friendship with Andrew opens Annie's eyes, not only about war, but about life, and gives Annie the strength to stand up to her mother and be her own person.
Industry Reviews "A girl on the brink of womanhood comes to terms with the brutal aftereffects of war in an absorbing novel." Trelease
