Details

Synopsis The most popular of the novels of the prolific British writer, whose Horatio Hornblower saga is one of the most enduring naval yarns of modern times. Later made by John Huston into a film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn, it describes the unlikely romance between Rosa Sayer, an English missionary, and Mr. Allnut, the skipper of a dilapidated steam launch on the Uganda River during the First World War. Sayer and Allnut journey downriver through enemy waters to blow up a German warship and fall in love in the midst of their hardships and dangers. The novel is, among other things, a spoof of traditional adventure stories.

Industry Reviews "The credulity of the reader may be stretched here and there, but, having given himself to the tale, as one must always give one's self up whole-heartedly to romance or eschew it altogether, he will go on. Suspended again and again in midair, he will find pleasure in the suspense, a device of which Mr. Forester again and again proves himself a master." Young
"Mr. Forester very likely has never seen Central Africa, and knows of the River Uganda merely by hearsay, but he can create an atmosphere that is what the fiction lover demands of an African tale, and having forced the reader to make the initial hurdle can persuade him of the inevitability of his episodes. Moreover, he has sufficient skill in characterization, sufficient psychological subtlety, to lift his story above the general run of adventure yarns, and enlist interest in his hero and heroine as personalities and not mere lay figures on which to hang excitement."
