As the summer progresses, Mary Lou must deal with a visit from her seemingly cloddish older cousin, Carl Ray, the death of a neighbor, changes in her friendship with her newly boy crazy pal, Beth Ann, and the possibility of her own romance with her classmate, Alex., Thirteen-year-old Mary Lou grows up considerably during the summer while learning about romance, homesickness, death, and her cousin's search for his biological father.
