Movie Description A 26-year-old gay novice priest defects from the cloth and moves to New York City, where he becomes a secular schoolteacher and falls in love with a junior executive. A breakthrough for American independent gay-themed features.
Synopsis This realistic drama explores the life of a 26-year-old gay man trying to adjust to after leaving the priesthood.
David becomes a teacher, but is afraid to come out for fear of losing his job. When he meets Mark, a cynical intellectual, the two hit it off and become. Although they move in together, David soon grows unhappy and decides to leave him. Then he hooks up with Jason, a divorced photographer. But will this relationship end in the same way as David's previous one?
One of the few films released in the 1970s to focus openly on homosexuality, "A Very Natural Thing" provides a look at gay life in New York City at that time.

The movie was reported to be the first American feature film made by a gay director who came out of the closet; the first feature about homosexuals made by an out-of-the-closet gay filmmaker that received national, commercial distribution; and the first gay feature that grossed over $1 million at the box office.
Interviews with participants in real-life Gay Liberation marches are used in the movie.
