Synopsis
In a story set in the 1960s' south, two brave young sisters secretly run away from home--"Past the early-morning milkman, over the cobbled bridge, and through the curb market"--and join a freedom march. The only children in a sea of adults, they revel in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., bright sunshine, and the fragrance of flowers. While the day is interrupted by a hostile sideline crowd, the girls experience their own little slice of civil rights history. Accompanied by evocative charcoal drawings, with only subtle hints of red in a ribbon, roses, and the American flag.
