Synopsis Anne Tyler's 14th novel tells the story of Barnaby Gaitlin of the "old" Baltimore Gaitlins, a man attempting to get his life back on track. Before his current job moving furniture for the elderly, Barnaby broke into houses--not to steal, but rather to peruse the owner's belongings, mail, and other personal keepsakes. Because of his past wrongdoings, his family can not forgive him, his ex-wife can not accept his place in their daughter's life, and his present girlfriend can not completely trust him. A New York Times Notable Book for 1998.

Publisher's Notes
First Line: "I am a man you can trust, is how my customers view me."
Industry Reviews "...Tyler repeatedly sacrifices urgency, the turmoil of true struggle; anyone familiar with her work takes up her new novel comfortable in the certainty that everything will turn out for the best, no matter how bumpy the ride. Aesthetically, Tyler seems never to challenge the limits of her formidable talent." Times Literary Supplement - Claire Messud (06/19/1998)
"Absolutely wonderful: Tyler's many admirer's are sure to number this among her very best work." Stevenson
"As [protagonist] Barnaby moves from one disappointment to another, the novel doesn't so much gallop to a climax as amble toward a conclusion. This kind of structure may be too low-key for some readers, but for those who stay the course, Tyler offers a number of rewards." Lehmann-Haupt
