Synopsis In Forster's beautifully written novel about British India at the turn of the century, a simple misunderstanding erupts into hostility. The plot centers on Aziz, a young doctor who is initially tolerant of the British presence in India. However, when he takes a group of Americans to the Caves of Marabar and an American woman accuses him of raping her, his attitude changes. Imprisoned and then released when the woman recants, Aziz becomes thoroughly disillusioned and a proponent of a Hindi-Muslim alliance against the British.

Publisher's Notes
First Line: "Except for the Marabar Caves--and they are twenty miles off--the city of Chandrapore presents nothing extraordinary."
Industry Reviews "The novel is a triumph of the humanistic spirit....It is also a work of art exquisite rather than profound. Last of all, it is a peculiarly valuable picture of the state of India seen through a very...courageous intelligence." Nation - Edwin Muir (10/08/1924)
"An exceptional novel...in which nothing, absolutely nothing, is said as anyone else would say it....This novel is one of the great literary victories over the inherent commonplaceness of words--a triumphant escape from the stereotyped." North American Review - C. H. Gaines (12/19/1924)
"Mr. E. M. Forster is indubitably one of the finest novelists living in England today, and 'A Passage to India' is one of the saddest, keenest, most beautifully written ironic novels of the time. Saying so much one is forced to say much more, for Mr. Forster's quality is unique....Certain obvious words suggest themselves as descriptive of this book and among them are 'subtle' and 'acute.' But they are not exact enough to describe that peculiar cool, clarified exposition that seems to miss nothing and that is so impregnated with unexplainable implications....Certainly 'A Passage to India' should greatly widen that rather small audience that has relished his novels in the past. And that rather small audience should congratulate itself on its acumen." New York Times Book Review - Herbert S. Gorman (08/17/1924)
"His new novel is the first he has published since Howards End. Its artistry is of the same finished kind, its vision as original...: it has the beauty and pathos which belong to Mr. Forster's best work." Mencken
