Juju and Psycho Les, better known as The Beatnuts, have been in the hip-hop game for a long time. In addition to producing this, their fourth album, and the three albums that preceded it, the duo has worked behind the boards for some of rap's biggest names. With A MUSICAL MASSACRE, The Beatnuts return to the underground hip-hop street sound that made "Off the Books" so hype. A MUSICAL MASSACRE delivers more crossover songs that any of the duo's previous efforts. On "Turn It Out," Les and Juju lay down entertaining rhymes over a tap-dance flavored beat while Greg Nice lends his vocals to the party-inspiring chorus. They collaborate with Terror Squad members Cuban Linx on "Slam Pit" and Triple Seis on "Beatnuts Forever" to add a hardcore flavor to the album. Tracks like "Gimme a Light," which uses the harmonizing sounds of Bad Boy crooner Carl Thomas, and "Watch Out Now," with its catchy whistle melody, give The Beatnuts the club hits that will make listeners want to get up and dance.
Industry Reviews ...MUSICAL MASSACRE is razor sharp from beginning to end and is arguably the best work the Beatnuts have assembled....[It] is sure to quench any Hip-Hopper's thirst. - Rating: B Rap Pages (10/01/1999)
...A MUSICAL MASSACRE is a departure of sorts from the diabolical duo's modus operandi....audibly more in-it-to-win-it than ever, our beloved Beatnuts are still creating unconventional music composed of eclectic sounds... Vibe (09/01/1999)
4 mics (out of 5) - ...The Beatnuts remain the paragons of paradox: They're cool enough to get crazy and crazy enough to be cool....A MUSICAL MASSACRE is so potent, they should only sell it on bars. The Source (09/01/1999)
3.5 stars out of 5 - ...raunchy as ever....With all the references to sex and weed, the only things getting massacred here may be sperm counts and brain cells. But the Beatnuts sure do know how to make self-destruction sound funky. Rolling Stone (10/28/1999)
