About this Book
Synopsis
The first of four volumes of Richardson's acclaimed biography of Picasso focuses on the artist's Spanish roots, his passionate involvement with Barcelona, where he became a hero of the Catalan Modernista movement, and his relocation to Paris in 1904. It follows Picasso's early years in the Parisian avant-garde circle and his complex relationships with Max Jacob, Apollinaire, and Gertrude Stein--the time that has come to be know as the "blue" and "rose" periods in the artist's work.

Industry Reviews
"It joins other grand English-language biographies of our time--Leon Edel's 'Henry James' and Nicholas Boyle's 'Goethe' come to mind--in the replete characterization of a fully creative human existence."
New York Times Book Review - Richard Howard (11/17/1996)

"[Richardson's] tone can be both intimate and dispassionate: there is no sense at all of undue reverence clouding judgment, and indeed what makes the two published volumes so outstanding is the sense of Picasso the man emerging--in all his complexity--alongside the superb analysis of Picasso the artist."
Spectator - William Boyd (11/09/1996)

"Once again, John Richardson proves to be our best guide to the life and work of this appalling 'mahdi of modern art'."
Wall Street Journal - Hilton Kramer (11/13/1996)
