Album Notes Personnel includes: John Tesh (vocals, piano); Natalie Grant, Nicole C. Mullen (vocals). A DEEPER FAITH isn't your everyday John Tesh album; for a start the entertainment news anchor-turned-new age superstar is singing, which only makes one wonder why he hasn't tried it before. He has an agreeable tenor voice, and acquits himself well on songs such as the opening "Open the Eyes of My Heart" and the percolating gospel funk (yes, you heard it here first, folks) of "You're Worthy of My Praise." Which leads to the second remarkable fact here, that A DEEPER FAITH eschews the quiet preciousness of other new age/worship releases for a full-on joyous outing through rock, funk, and gospel/R&B that takes only occasional stops for breath with the ambient-sounding "Psalm 66" and the ballad-like "I Am Not Alone," and even includes a kids' song in the mysteriously titled "Anjus Wav-Um." Of course it wouldn't be a John Tesh album without a solo piano piece, and the maestro is happy to oblige with the title track, a catchy tune that in a way seems to summarize the album's essential light-heartedness and spirit. With A DEEPER FAITH Tesh seems more at ease than ever before with combining modern and traditional idioms, and the result is a treat for both ears and soul.
