Album Notes
This is another volume in the wonderful series of CDs chronicling the recordings of Slim Gaillard from the '30s and '40s. Over the course of these 20 selections, Gaillard is joined by, among others, Charlie Parker, Dodo Marmarosa, and Dizzy Gillespie. The enduring qualities of this music include the relentless invention coupled with disarming friendliness.
Gaillard was capable of, in one moment offering a steady stream of faux-foreign language raps (as on "Cuban Rhumba"), and then a convincing, albeit sleepy-headed romantic ballad ("As Long As I Have Your Love" for one). His humorous songs--such as "Cement Mixer"--feature winning group chorus vocals making the absurd seem natural. Furthermore, Gaillard was equally capable a player on both the piano and the guitar, soloing with genuine character. This historical series is timeless, essential listening.
