Album Notes
Personnel: Charles Brown (vocals, piano); Frankie Laine, Johnny McNeil (vocals); Johnny Moore, Oscar Moore (guitar); Eddie Williams (bass); Johnny Otis (drums).
Recorded in Los Angeles, California in 1944 & 1945. Includes liner notes by Anatol Schenker.
These are Charles Brown's earliest recordings, released under the name of Johnny Moore's band the Three Blazers. Guitarist Moore and bassist Eddie Williams, in need of a new piano player for their Los Angeles-based trio, found Brown when he performed at an amateur show. His piano playing, smooth vocals, and original songs soon made the trio extremely successful. The Brown-penned "Drifitin' Blues" (included on this album) earned them a spot on the charts for nearly six months. Brown stayed with the Three Blazers for the remainder of the '40s before launching his own band that continued in a style quite similar to these recordings. This volume is the first of a series that collects all of Brown's recordings in chronological order.
